Purchase Policy

There is a list of chemicals which must, unless with the approval of DG Manager, be purchased centrally through DGSU. Subject to the approval of this list by the Committee on Safety, the Business Unit of the Finance Office will be instructed not to process POs in respect of these chemicals except from the DGSU. In addition, DGSU can purchase and store on behalf of departments any other dangerous goods on the list under the Dangerous Goods Ordinance CAP.295.

Transport Policy

Chemicals stored in DGSU stores will only be transported by the staff of the Unit, using licensed DG vehicles and proper containers, and delivered daily per user orders on regular "mail" routes. Campus-wide and off-campus transfer of Class 2 and Class 3 dangerous goods are also regulated by the Dangerous Goods Ordinance, and require the use of licensed DG vehicles provided by DGSU with competent staff.

Storage Policy

Guided by the Dangerous Goods Ordinance and taking into account the practicalities, University Safety Office will perform risk assessments and set limits for each location. The dangerous goods licenses will cover dangerous goods of Class 2 to Class 8 (with the exception of Class 6.2), which are commonly used by various laboratories of the University. These restrictions will be strictly enforced, and chemicals beyond these limits must be stored in the licensed dangerous goods stores.
